The Ars Canusina was born as an artistic expression of the manufacturing in the region of Reggio Emilia in the Thirties, to accompany a didactic action for handicapped children. The iconographic elements are taken from the design expression of the matildic age, as they are reproduced in a printed repertory by Maria Bertolani Del Rio in 1935, recently reprinted. It is a sort of anthologic collection of designs taken from capitals baptisimal fonts, architraves, miniated books, all belonging to a carolingian romanesque tradition that presents, in this specific region, some local interesting variations. Its mark has obtained, since 1932, some very important international confirmations. Many artisans today work following the formal and qualitative standards of the Ars Canusina: from jewelery to ceramics to inlaying terracotta, to sculpture, to brodery to tissue decorations. The municipality of Casina, decorates with this mark the artisans who decide to characterize the territorial production by some qualitative artistic manufactures.

The Ars Canusina gives its best results in the fields of ceramics, majolica and terracotta: lamps, pots, dishes are prepared on the lathe. The objects decorated in the Ars Canusina's style are numbered.
Embroidery

The embroidery is also a typical local production, a very ancient familiar tradition that was risking the extinction, recently appreciated, with its matildic designs, at an international level.

One of the main sectors of the Canusina manufacturing is the goldsmith's, adapting some matildic decorations in some actual forms: netlaces, brooches, bracelets, rings, pendents prepared by carving or by embossment. Another important application of the 'ars canusina' is the inlaying of fired coloured brick, to create some unique pieces, some furniture elements like tables, consolles, panels, designed with matildic elements. Sculpture, as it is witnessed by the artist Carmela Adani, has also adopted the designed elements of the Ars Canusina with fascinating results.
