The ruins of the Castle |

Ciano |

Canossa, once
called Ciano (the name refers today to the main centre), turns
around its most magnificient building, the Castle of Canossa,
and its own memories, starting from the historical meeting of
the Pope and the Emperor in 1077. The landscape preserves some
intelligible traces of its important past: the castle of Rossena
and the Rossenella tower for example, main defensive ressource
of the town. Enriched by an elegant severe frame of ancient
castles, the villages face some terrific landscapes of calanques,
obscure woods and misty hills: Cerredolo dei Coppi, Monchio
delle Olle, Vedriano. A peculiar suggestion comes from the village
of Votigno, recently restaured, simple and harmonious centre
of the bouddhist spirituality. The beauty of the Tempietto di
Selvapiana reminds us of an ancient passage of Petrarca in these
lands, while the most meaningful naturalistic aspects are to
be discovered in the naturalistic parc of the Rupe di Campotrera
and in the stony edges of the pure waters of the Enza, appreciated
summer oasis. Behind the shopping centre of Ciano some interesting
traces of the roman town of Lucerna can be recognized by skilled
tourists. From Ciano you can start your walk around the ancient
proprieties of the countess Matilde.
