Castellarano

The fort

The fortified village
Castellarano is a beautiful mediaeval centre, incredibly well preserved. At the feet of the hill, the 'Rocchetta', under restauration works, introduces you to the fortified walled centre. The dominating position, on the river Secchia, strongly influenced the strategic importance of Castellarano, powerfully fortified during the matildic age. A charming stony path, made out of river cobbles crosses the ancient village, leading to the castle and to the tower bell.
The castle faces the romanic parish of St Maria Assunta. Not far from there you can visit the arches of a roman beautiful aqueduct. Every September, during the Wine Festival, the villages flourishes of dances and costume spectacles. But there can be many other reasons convincing the visitors to spend some days here: the wonderful naturalistic areas (the charming Rio Rocca is worth a rest) or the historical and monumental sites (the matildic castle of St Valentino, the tower and the old village of Montebabbio).
An excursionistic ring is also accessible from Castellarano.
