The lands of Matilda, distinguished by the outlines of their characteristic castles and their ancient parishes and historical villages, represent a vast, mostly hilly area where traces of medieval culture can still be read in the signs it has left there, and where material culture and wine-and-food traditions have preserved strong historical roots.
The area is promoted, and its tourism potential harnessed, by the activities of the public-private company Matilde di Canossa S.p.A. and is divided into 22 municipalities belonging to 4 provinces in the Emilia Romagna region.
