Montecchio Emilia

Detail of the fort

The village with its tower
Built on some alluvial deposits (this is the origin of the name) used as a residential basis since the oldest times because of their healhty characteristics, in opposition to the marshes and the woods, Montecchio still bear the traces of an ancient history, starting from the ruins of its XV century walls. The castle, built on the western part of the walls, facing the river Enza, is a public propriety and could profit, in the last years, of a sort of local renaissance and restauration works. Consequently a carolingian itinerary was prepared with a special stop in an old cemetery. Just out of the village a visit can be paid to the imposing sanctuary of the 'Beata Vergine dell'Olmo' and, in the village of Aiola, to the ethnographic museum. In this same village, on the 1° of Mai, people are used to prepare the real Parmesan cheese on the fire of faggots.
