Nonantola

The abbey

The bell tower
A few km north-east from Modena You find the charming municipality of Nonantola, famous for its ancient battles against this main town, that Nonantola undertook with the help of the more distant Bologna. The bishop of Modena wanted so much to conquer it he ordered to destroy it completely in 1143. In fact Nonantola was a very important centre, for culture and spirituality, because of its abbey, founded in 753, and repeatedly rebuilt over and over, till our times, following the original romanesque shape. This is one of the most famous romanesque abbeys and one of the main cultural attractions of northern Italy: it witnesses the powerful activity of a spiritual and economic community, that lost its importance from the XV century. After the abbey You can pay a visit to the interesting parish of S. Michele Arcangelo and to the medieval defensive towers built from Modena and Bologna around the XIII and XIV centuries.
