From Reggio Emilia
on the traditional itinerary of Canossa Leaving Reggio Emilia
you can reach the matildic ring taking for Quattro Castella
through Cavriago and Bibbiano. In Quattro Castella (castle of
Bianello, costume procession on the last Sunday of May) you
take for Canossa driving up the way behind the residential centre,
enjoing the wonderful panoramic view on the plain. Before Canossa
have a rest at the parish Madonna della Battaglia built by Matilde
as a souvenir of the victorious battle against the Emperor's
armies in 1092. After the visit of Canossa (and of the castle
of Rossena, not far from there) you can get back through Cavandola
and Votigno, a restaured village made out of stone, today important
symbol of bouddhism. From Votigno take for Pecorile to reach
the road SS 63 to Reggio. Just before the town you find Ville
d'Este, on an artifical lake, and Rivaltella and the ruins of
the dukal villa of Rivalta that let you guess the important
history of the Estense domination in XVIII century. The way
we have suggested implies some narrow roads and passages requiring
a careful driving.
