The land of Matilde is characterized by some traditional stone villages and by some imposing castles, by many parishes representing its characteristical religious dimension. These parishes (from which depended some minor chapels) developed an assistance service as they were strategically disposed on the territory, often together with a castle. The parishes constitued a real part of the territorial matildic organization. We know that the countess herself was a strong promoter of the construction of parishes and churches. They could provide to their maintainance thanks to the tithes, that is to say thanks to the offerings of the faithful, that were rigidly regulated (some important documents of the Middle ages have been conserved accounting the tithes of every chapel belonging to every parish). A few buildings have preserved their original architectural elements. Most of them have been submitted to important transformations.
To the XVI century the parishes's façade is oriented to West as demanded by the tradition. The plan is rectangular, normally having three naves and two aisles, an apse at an end. The sculptured decoration of the capitals was important (a few of them have survived through the centuries) just as the decoration of the imposing baptisimal fonts.
