Quattro Castella

The Four Hills

The castle of Bianello - Inside view
One of the most impressive villages of the region, dominated by the mysterious profile of the mountains, Quattro Castella, ownes its name to some four ancient castles that used to protect these people from the ennemies coming from the plain: even if three of them are reduced to ruins, the fourth, Bianello, is well preserved and restaured, and famous for hosting the emperor Henry IV before its important meeting with the Pope in Canossa in 1077. The panoramic view, from here, is sublime, and even more fascinating in winter when the first Alps can be perceived through the mist.
Visits are recommended to the church of S. Antonino (in the village), the parish of the Madonna della Battaglia, and to the charming naturalistic oasis of Bianello just under the castle, or to the parc of Roncolo, with a sweet, Tuscany-like, perspective. Don't miss the Matildic procession, one of the most famous historical occasions, accompanied by other inviting events.
