The ancient castle
of the village, recently restaured, hosts the local, and its
fascinating entrance, with romanesque traces, represents clearly
the ancient origins of the village. Built on the 'pedemontana'
street at the feet of the mountains and on the river Enza, this
village had always a strategic importance, as a mediation between
the regions of Parma (Montechiarugolo has a specular position)
and Reggio. The impressive 'Gigante Caduto' (Fallen Giant),
devoted to the partisans of World War II, and the parish can
be visited in the old medieval centre. A walk can be paid to
the monastery of Montefalcone, under restauration works, to
the old parish of Caviano, or to the stony houses of Grassano,
on the way to Canossa. An excursionistic ring is also available
for sportive tourists. S.Polo offers some interesting cultural
events, historical festivals and gastronomical occasions.
