At the end of the
Eighties, the administration of the region of Reggio Emilia
and the Comunità Montana of the Appennino Reggiano started
an activity of publication and information about the territory
, its cultural environmental and historical ressources, without
neglecting the alternative tourism. This is how the idea to
trace again this historical way was born: from the mouth of
the river Enza to the earth of the domain of the Canossa, to
the castles of Rossena, Canossa, Sarzano, Carpineti, to Toano
and so on to the ridge and to the Passo delle Forbici, throught
the towered "via delle Scalelle" and to the lands
of Tuscany. This charming itinerary will introduce you to the
old ways of communication, to the defensive strategies based
on castles and towered houses (Cavandola, Monchio, Sorchio and
Riana are all part of the journey), and to the fascination of
a beautifully preserved territory, with its ancient sulphurose
springs of Quara, the hog-backed bridge of Cadignano and the
plasters on the river Secchia.
Matilde's way goes from North to South
and presents no special difficulties. You can cover it through
four stages:
I stage - Ciano d'Enza, Rossena, Canossa, Bergogno,
Monchio dei Ferri, Castle of Sarzano, Casina (6 hours).
II stage - Casina, Migliara, Branciglia, Badia di Marola,
