The green and wild
environment, with its medioeval villages and castles make the
landscape of the matildic area particularly fit for open air
activities and sports. Horse riders can profit of a special
way crossing vertically the Apennines from the parmesan side
to the region of Reggio, to the Enza river, to the 'Valle dei
Cavalieri', the 'Riders' valley', remembrance of an ancient
community of feodal lords: their fascinating story is well bound
to the life of Matilde di Canossa and to her descendants. A
special attention has been paid to trekkers: the 'Sentiero di
Matilde' is a well signalled track, equipped with twenty areas
for rests, crossing all the matildic hills in the regions of
Reggio and Modena where it is connected with the tracks net
leading to Lucca, through the charming village of San Pellegrino
in Alpe.
A 50.000 free map, available at the tourist offices or at the
mail address turismo@provincia.re.it,
helps you with the excursionistic tracks describing the way
in details.
An English or German versions are also available. Climbers will
enjoy a visit to the extraordinary monolith of the Pietra di
Bismantova, a beautiful rock compared by Dante to the Purgatory
mountain, and famous training ground for climbing (not far from
the village of Castelnovo Monti, where visitors will find hospitality
and facilities).
A wonderful ground for golf, with nine pits, specifically called
'Matilde di Canossa', is located at San Bartolomeo, a small
village on the hills near Reggio Emilia; another nine pits golf
ground is in San Valentino di Castellarano. We won't forget
the fourty-years long tradition of canoe international descent
on the river Enza, near Vetto's village. The Apenninic climate
allows spring descents on the river Enza, much earlier than
on the Alps. The environmental context of the river is terrific,
with gigantic stones and deep pits of clear quick waters. The
hotels of the valley are well equipped to host sportsmen and
visitors. The Enza river is well appreciated by the canoe and
kayak lovers. |
